The health and safety of our workforce is our highest priority, particularly in the high-risk environments involving mobile equipment operation, hydro excavating, and general excavating.

We believe that all workplace injuries and illnesses are preventable through proactive risk management, continuous training, and strict adherence to occupational health and safety regulations, including the Workers Compensation Act and the WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.

Management, supervisors, and workers at every level are responsible and accountable for our company's health and safety performance. Active participation by everyone is essential to maintaining the safety standards at Westcoast Industrial.

In the event of a serious injury, fatality, or major incident, the employer will notify WorkSafeBC immediately. We are committed to investigating incidents, determining root causes, and implementing corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Operational Safety

Specific Operational Requirements

Mobile Equipment & Logs

  • Pre-operational inspection required before every shift
  • Unsafe defects must be reported immediately to supervisor
  • Equipment logs maintained for all mobile equipment
  • Records kept for minimum 2 years
  • Equipment removed from service if defect affects safe operation
  • No operation if contact made with high-voltage electrical source until inspected

Hydro Excavating

  • All underground utilities must be located and marked before excavation
  • Hand expose zone: 1 metre either side of utility locate marks
  • Minimum water pressure required to break up soil
  • Wand operator maintains firm two-handed grip at all times
  • Wand kept in continuous motion to prevent ground collapse
  • Work zone established with cones, barricades, and signage

General Excavating

  • No worker to enter excavation over 1.2m (4 ft) without proper shoring
  • Sides must be sloped, benched, or supported per WorkSafeBC Part 20
  • Adjacent trees, poles, and objects secured if they pose danger
  • Competent supervisor inspects excavations daily
  • Inspection required after every rainstorm or hazard-increasing event
  • Traffic control plan required for roadway-adjacent work zones

Hydrovac Standard Operating Procedures

Our hydro excavation operations are governed by a comprehensive SOP document developed in accordance with standards established by the BC Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA) and the Canadian Common Ground Alliance (CCGA). All employees must read, understand, and comply with these procedures prior to performing hydro excavation work.

Mobilization & Site Setup

Position unit on stable level ground, engage parking brake and wheel chocks, establish work zone with cones and barricades. Traffic control plan required for roadway-adjacent sites.

Equipment Startup

Engage PTO per manufacturer instructions. Bring water pump and vacuum system up to operating parameters gradually. Confirm overhead clearance before boom deployment.

Hydro Excavation Execution

Maintain firm two-handed grip on wand at all times. Keep wand in continuous motion. Set water pressure to minimum required. Work from outer perimeter inward toward utility locate marks.

Emergency Procedures

Immediate shutdown protocol for utility strikes, high-pressure injection injuries, and equipment failure. All crew trained in emergency response and first aid requirements.

Maintenance & Recordkeeping

Pre-shift inspection of all components including vacuum intake hose, boom assembly, high-pressure hose reel, and rear door. All defects logged and reported immediately.

Training Requirements

All operators must complete mandatory training before performing hydro excavation work. Ongoing training program ensures crew remain current with BCCSA and CCGA standards.
